After the sudden death of their father, the Dashwood family is left destitute. The novel follows the fortunes of this family, focusing especially on the experiences of the two elder sisters, who embody diametrically opposed outlooks on life: while Elinor represents common sense and reason, Marianne is driven by emotion and feeling. The challenges these two young women must overcome in their romantic misadventures teach them that perhaps a virtuous balance between both attitudes is the only way forward.
Sense and Sensibility, the first novel published by Austen, perfectly reflects the rigid and unjust society of the late nineteenth century and the limited opportunities available to women at the time.
Jane Austen (Steventon, 1775 - Winchester, 1817) es la primera gran mujer de la literatura inglesa. Sin embargo, su talento no siempre recibió una aceptación unánime y, aunque alcanzó la fama en vida, tardó en conseguir la posición canónica que ocupa hoy. Jane, sexta y última hija del reverendo de Steventon, vivió siempre con sus padres, hermanos y sobrinos en Hampshire y Bath. Educada en casa y con una vasta biblioteca a su disposición, escribió relatos desde muy joven, que se recogen en su Juvenilia. Antes de los veintiún años, empezó la elaboración de Orgullo y prejuicio. Después, le seguirían Mansfield Park, Sentido y sensibilidad, Emma, Persuasión, Los Watson y La abadía de Northanger, obras que reescribiría a lo largo de su vida. Poco antes de los cuarenta y un años, empezó a escribir Sanditon, que dejaría inacabada al fallecer prematuramente. A pesar de empezar publicando sus novelas de forma anónima, murió con casi toda su obra publicada y cierto reconocimiento en Inglaterra. La ironía y el retrato de la sociedad de su tiempo hacen de su obra un punto de referencia ineludible en la historia de la literatura universal.
Jane Austen (Steventon, 1775 - Winchester, 1817) is the first great woman of English literature. However, her talent did not always receive unanimous acceptance, and although she achieved fame during her lifetime, it took a while for her to gain the canonical position she holds today. Jane, the sixth and youngest daughter of the rector of Steventon, always lived with her parents, siblings, and nephews in Hampshire and Bath. Educated at home and with a vast library at her disposal, she wrote stories from a very young age, which are collected in her Juvenilia. Before the age of twenty-one, she began working on Pride and Prejudice. Later, she would follow with Mansfield Park, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Persuasion, The Watsons, and Northanger Abbey, works she would rewrite throughout her life. Shortly before the age of forty-one, she began writing Sanditon, which she would leave unfinished due to her premature death. Despite initially publishing her novels anonymously, she died with almost all her works published and with some recognition in England. The irony and the depiction of the society of her time make her work an indispensable reference point in the history of world literature.
