Dr. Roland Amoussou-Guenou, "Dr. Salsa," writes as a researcher, cultural inheritor, and participant. Born in Benin, descended from his maternal Nevis family, custodians of the Egungun ancestral tradition-and founder of SALSA CONCEPT(R), he brings more than two decades of experience to this story.
With contributions from salsa pioneers, including Eddie Torres, the legendary "Mambo King," this is more than the history of a dance.

Dr. Roland Amoussou-Guenou, known as "Dr. Salsa," is an international lawyer, ICC arbitrator, and founder of SALSA CONCEPT(R), a cultural education framework protecting a distinct methodology for teaching Salsa's history, musicality, and African roots, held since 2005 and renewed by Thailand's Department of Intellectual Property through 2035.
Born in Cotonou, Benin, the heart of the former Kingdom of Dahomey, he descends through his mother's line from the Nevis family, Nago/Yoruba keepers of the Egungun culture. As the first son born on a Monday, he received the ceremonial Egungun initiation and was entrusted with the secrets of its sacred dance, a heritage that would later shape his understanding of rhythm, ancestry, and performance as inseparable forces. In December 2023, he was anointed Prince of the Kingdom of Savalou, formally joining a royal lineage.
For over two decades, he has taught, DJed, lectured, and organized Salsa events across Asia, from Bangkok to Seoul to Hanoi, while practicing as an international lawyer and arbitrator in Thailand. In 2022, he was named African Man of the Year, Asia Pacific, for this work bridging African heritage with the communities he built across the region.
He is president and co-founder of the AsiAfrica Foundation, a cultural diplomacy initiative connecting Africa, Asia, and the world through education, research, and the arts. He is a member of the International Dance Council (CID) under UNESCO and has served as legal adviser to the Board of Trustees of the Asian Institute of Technology and as diplomatic coordinator for Thailand's Silk Road to the World initiative.
SALSA: The Unstoppable Rhythm That Conquered the World is the product of over twenty years of research across Africa, the Caribbean, the Americas, Europe, and Asia, lived alongside his own work as a teacher, performer, and cultural bridge builder. It is his first full-length book.
