This made India a large part of his life from his mid-twenties onward, and gave him a distinctive voice in the movement for ecological preservation. John's refusal to shut the door on unusual options led to his decision to return to New Zealand at the age 59 to live on a remote forested property in the Marlborough Sounds. This was his base for 20 years in teaching shamanic workshops and leading study tours to India, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.
