In a changing South, an old aristocrat confronts the clash of tradition and modernity while hunting in Georgia. As he grapples with his past and the new landscape shaped by outsiders, a young boy observes the complexities of identity and humanity.

Rendezvous at Dusk delves into the life of Nick Ivey, a descendant of a prominent Savannah family, who travels to Midville to join fellow aristocrats for a deer hunt at the expansive Indian Town Plantation, owned by the charismatic Jock Patterson. This gathering serves as a backdrop to explore the fading influence of Savannah's elite in contemporary America. The narrative unfolds against Georgia's rich yet contradictory history, revealing the mixed legacy of its aristocracy.

The novel intricately weaves themes of the Southern past and present, addressing issues of racism, redemption, and the duality of human nature-kindness intertwined with self-interest. Nick reflects on the Southern culture of his youth and the evolving identity of the 21st century South, contemplating the impact of newcomers on the region's landscape. He grapples with the hypocrisy and redeeming qualities of both the old and new, recognizing the shared human experiences that connect us all.

As Nick pursues a wounded buck into the river bottomland, he confronts his own humanity and fate. The story culminates with young Henry Jones, a boy on the brink of adolescence, who witnesses the tragicomic realities of modern Southern life. Through Henry's eyes, the narrative captures the intricate dance between past and future, revealing how imagination shapes both, highlighting their similarities and differences. In this poignant exploration, the characters navigate the complexities of identity, tradition, and the ever-changing South.
