A veteran of the Chicano Movement, he has organized countless conferences, seminars, and community actions on behalf of the Mexican American and Latino communities. Cano taught courses in Mexican American Studies and led numerous student educational trips throughout Mexico while he was the Associate Director at the University of Houston's Center for Mexican American Studies. Originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, he currently lives with his wife, Grisel, near Houston, in Onalaska, Texas.
