Meanwhile, her twelve-year-old daughter Midoriko is paralyzed by the fear of impending puberty and can only express herself through a notebook. Natsu, thirty years old, is an aspiring writer struggling with her own indeterminate identity of being neither "daughter" nor "mother."
Gathered in a working-class neighborhood in Tokyo, they spend several days together in which Midoriko's silence becomes a catalyst for confronting their fears--many of them imposed by being women in today's society--and their family secrets.
