In PAYING THE PRICE: A LIFE IN FOOTBALL...AND BEYOND, Earnel Durden traces his life from tumultuous post-war Los Angeles to his time as an assistant coach for the San Diego Chargers and beyond. From his college-career--and the injury that ended it all--to his lifelong association and friendship with coaching legend Tommy Prothro, Durden recounts his unlikely journey through the ranks of professional football.

Durden was witness to more than a half- century of history, both on the field and off. As an African-American man coming of age during the peak of the Civil Rights movement, Earnel struggled at every stage of his career to prove himself, often as the first Black man in any position he occupied. As a player and then a coach, he watched--and often participated--as the game fundamentally changed in the professional sport we know today.

Beset by challenges and rocked with personal tragedies, Earnel Durden's memoir is a tale of perseverance even in the face of incredible difficulties--of truly learning what it means to "pay the price."

Durden, Earnel: - Born in Jefferson, Texas in 1937, Earnel Durden spent most of his formative years in Los Angeles during a time when the city itself was growing and changing in exciting ways. As a young man, Durden attended Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, California, where he advanced in his football playing career, and upon graduation, was recruited to play for the Oregon State Beavers, and he successfully led them to the 1957 Rose Bowl. However, a game against Washington State changed his life forever-a sudden injury forced him to rethink his future. Playing football professionally could no longer be on the forefront. It was then that Durden began to pursue athletic coaching as a career, and he has since gone on to coach at high school and college level, and professional teams like the Houston Oilers the Los Angeles Rams, and the San Diego Chargers. Retired from coaching now, Earnel is a real estate entrepreneur and a small-business owner. He lives in San Diego with his wife (and high school sweetheart!), June, and his large extended family.
