RICHARD D. MANDELL was born and raised in Detroit and received his undergraduate education at Wayne State University. After travelling for several years in Europe and Mexico he completed his M.A. and PH.D. in history. He has worked for several years as a bibliographer and is now Assistant Professor of history at the University of South Carolina.
