This volume provides a much-needed reference work on artists active in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area from 1880 to 1990. It is a prime source of biographical information on many talented but little-known artists. Before 1950 many painters saw Albuquerque as a jumping-off point for the art colonies of Taos and Santa Fe. But noted artists such as Gerald Cassidy, Carl Redin, Carl Von Hassler and Esquipula Romero de Romero stayed on in the city for extended periods. After World War II Albuquerque came into its own as a leading center of artistic activity. It was home to innovative work that included the abstractions of Raymond Jonson and Richard Diebenkorn, the lithography done at the Tamarind Institute, and computer-generated art. The University of New Mexico and Sandia National Laboratories provided inspiration and employment for many artists. Further details on painters, their work, and the networks that supported them will be found in artist entries in this volume as well as in the Introduction.
