In the late 1910s, Pullman porter-turned-successful self-published novelist Oscar Micheaux was unimpressed by the film rights offers for his works-and embarked on a 30-year career writing, directing, producing, and self-distributing silent and talking motion pictures, bringing perspectives to appreciative African Americans that Hollywood could not.
