McAllister, Eugene J.: - Born in the South Bronx and raised mostly in Santa Clara, California, Eugene J. McAllister is the son of first-generation American parents who sacrificed to provide him and his six brothers and sisters with excellent educations.Gene earned a B.S. from Loyola Marymount University, an M.A. from the University of California, Davis, and a Ph.D. in economics from The Catholic University of America. But it was his Jesuit high school, Bellarmine Prep in San Jose, where Gene first learned to grapple with the big questions of life and to use reason and faith to address them. Gene began his professional life writing about economic policy in Washington D.C. This led to high level positions at the White House and U.S. Department of State. He had the privilege of working with some remarkable men and women while serving two extraordinary presidents: Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.Believing in the power of learning, Gene started a "second career" as president of a Catholic liberal arts university in Montana. More than half of the students at the University of Great Falls were the first in their family to attend college. Gene tried to know each student's name and something about him or her. Gene also served as Interim President at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. He loved joining the Benedictine monks at prayer.With a love of reading, writing was the next step. Gene has embarked on his "third career" with the novel Now I See.When not reading or writing, or cheering on his favorite sports teams, Gene enjoys all of the activities of Fernandina Beach with his wife, Sanford, and sons, Walker, Patrick, and Connor.
