Conventional wisdom suggests we should just 'bounce back' after adversity. Resilience is a strategy; a set of skills that can be learned in advance to enable us to move forward despite adversity.

In Not Defined by Adversity, Rhonda Emonson PhD brings us stories from those who have faced adversity and found the strength, motivation, faith and ability to move forward in spite of the challenges they faced. You will be inspired and encouraged upon reading the contributions from:

  • Steven Teo, Pastor and Lawyer - Australia
  • Amelia Bebeth Opao, Seamstress and Community Leader - the Philippines
  • Kristin Jack, Manager and Author - New Zealand
  • Emma Randall, Freelance Project Manager - United Kingdom
  • Amanda Nickson, Author, Speaker, Social Worker - Australia
  • Russel Atonson, Medical Practitioner - the Philippines
  • Suzetta Torres Sutcliffe, Director of Joraben Christian Academy and Joyland Foundation - the Philippines and Australia
  • Eleanor Cordova, Pastor and Educator - the Philippines

Emonson, Rhonda: - As a mediator, coach and counsellor, Rhonda Emonson PhD has worked extensively in community and private settings with those experiencing disputes, disagreements and difficult relationships. She was the first Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner in Australia to complete research at a PhD level on the effective preparation of parents for mediation. During her research, she developed The Bird Family Cards. To complement the cards, Rhonda has also written two books suitable to use with children who are experiencing parental separation. Archie and Charlotte are available online and at good book stores.Rhonda's personal journey has been impacted by two major (and unrelated) life-changing, physical, medical episodes. One in 1989 and another in 2001. Each episode required many hospital admissions, time away from family, rehabilitation and time to 'review' life and ponder on what is really important.Caring for others who professionally care for others is a passion for Rhonda. For many years, she has worked in health and related sectors and has noticed colleagues giving 'their all' and experiencing compassion fatigue and psychological exhaustion as a result of caring for others far more than they care for themselves. This has influenced and helped shape her desire to work with those who want to create change in their current circumstance, unlock personal growth and live a life aligned with their values. As a result of this passion, Rhonda is the Founder and Director of Carer Care Inc., a not-for-profit organisation that provides training, coaching and counselling for those who professionally care for others and who live in situations where they are not able to access support for psychological exhaustion.
