A Tithable refers to a person who paid, or for whom someone else paid, one of the taxes that the General Assembly of the state/colony imposed for the support of the civil government of that state or colony. These tithables permit the identification of county residents and provide information about various family relationships in crucial years prior to the American revolution. Another useful aspect to these records: the naming of slaves. This can be a very useful tool when trying research slave ancestry. The Original lists are so badly damaged that examination in now restricted. The care taken to ensure the accuracy of these transcriptions will, however, make this book an adequate substitute.
