Mira has dreamed her whole short life of carving eagles and dancers from stone. When Master Hiroshi finally takes her as his apprentice in the mountain village of cherry blossoms and skilled hands, her heart lifts. Then he hands her her first assignment: one thousand small cubes, all identical. Plain. Simple. Hers.
Mira's chisel grows heavy. Her back aches. The other apprentices laugh with their birds and lions while she sits with her endless pile of plain stones. But something quiet begins to happen in her hands. Each cube a little truer than the last. Each chip a little surer. By the time she carves her thousandth cube, she understands what Master Hiroshi was teaching all along.
A picture book about the unglamorous work that makes mastery possible. For any child whose ambitions are bigger than their patience - and for the grown-ups who love them.
Perfect for: read-aloud, conversations about discipline and practice, mentorship and apprenticeship themes, ages 4 to 8.
