Wayne Schooley, a young soldier returning from France after the end of the great war is stricken with the dreaded Spanish flu (1918 influenza pandemic.) Fighting his way back from death's door, he returns home to find his parents are dead, victims of the dreaded disease.
Putting his life back together, he is helped by an old friend, the sheriff of the town. He reunites with the sheriff's daughter Cassie, who is now a nurse. Wayne and his friend, Lyle, take jobs as deputies in the growing town of Marshfield, Wisconsin. But, with prohibition to soon be the new law of the land, the two young men are caught up in the violence that ensues.
Yet, along the way, Wayne and Cassie find love.
