A gentle, spooky fantasy adventure inspired by Appalachian folklore in the Blue Ridge and Catoctin Mountains, for readers ages 8 and up..

Deep in the Catoctin Mountains, where old forests hide secret caves and the wind still carries whispers from the past, nine-year-old Frederick discovers that his grandfather's bedtime stories are more than folklore.

When Frederick stumbles into a hidden cave above his family's cabin, he comes face-to-face with the Snallygaster, a legendary flying creature the mountain folk have feared for generations. But instead of danger, Frederick finds a friend and the beginning of an adventure that carries him across the Blue Ridge and Catoctin Mountains.

Along the way, Frederick meets the Goat Man, the Mothman, the Snarly Yow, the Human-Faced Cat of Short Hill Mountain, the Banshee, and other enduring legends of the region. As he travels through western Maryland, West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, and northern Virginia, he learns that the mysterious creatures of the mountains are not always the monsters people believe them to be.

Legends of the Catoctin Wilds weaves regional myths, local landscapes, history, courage, kindness, and care for the natural world into a sweeping tale about friendship, belonging, and the stories worth remembering.

Perfect for young readers and families who love regional folklore, Appalachian legends, cryptids, gentle fantasy, and adventure.
