Last First Snow: A Novel of the Craft Sequence
From Max Gladstone, co-author of the viral New York Times bestseller This is How You Lose the Time War
Last First Snow is the fourth installment in Max Gladstone's acclaimed Craft Sequence, a modern fantasy series that reimagines magic as legal practice and economic power. Set forty years after the God Wars, this standalone novel explores the struggle to build a just society in Dresediel Lex, a city scarred by liberation and bound by the decaying edicts of fallen gods.
The Story
In the Skittersill, a poor district of Dresediel Lex, ancient divine wards are failing. These wards prevent development while active, but their collapse threatens to unleash demons upon the city. The King in Red hires Elayne Kevarian from the Craft firm Kelethres, Albrecht, and Ao to repair the failing magic. However, the community has other plans.
Temoc, a former warrior-priest turned community organizer, leads a protest against Elayne's work. Fighting for a peaceful future for his city, his wife, and his young son, Temoc challenges the imposed solution. As Elayne drags both Temoc and the King in Red to the bargaining table, old wounds reopen, ancient gods stir, and civil unrest threatens to tear the city apart. Together, they must confront conspiracy, dark magic, and their own demons to preserve peace—or save as many lives as possible.
A Phenomenally Built World
The Craft Sequence presents a unique fantasy landscape where lawyers ride lightning bolts, souls function as currency, and cities draw power from the remains of fallen gods. Gladstone blends legal thriller elements with epic fantasy, creating a world that examines themes of justice, community, and the cost of progress.
