Crasna, 1944: Rosie is eighteen when she is torn from her family life in her hometown on the Romanian-Hungarian border by the Nazis. From that moment on, she begins an unimaginable journey through suffering that takes her to various labor and concentration camps.In Auschwitz, Rosie loses even the last trace of dignity, but in the midst of despair, she realizes something the Nazis can never take from her: her inner strength. And so, despite the atrocities around her, she refuses to give up.

Nechama Birnbaum supo desde niña que algún día contaría la historia de su abuela. Mientras las abuelas de sus amigas les llevaban regalos, la suya le regalaba relatos, y no había nada que le gustara más. Cuando le contó cómo deshojaba flores para averiguar si el chico que le gustaba correspondía a sus sentimientos, y cómo arrugaba el pétalo que terminaba en "no me quiere" para volver a empezar hasta obtener un "me quiere", Nechama tuvo la certeza de que escribiría sobre aquella mujer decidida e inquebrantable.

Nechama Birnbaum knew from childhood that one day she would tell her grandmother's story. While her friends' grandmothers brought them gifts, hers gave her stories, and there was nothing she loved more. When her grandmother told her how she would pluck petals from flowers to find out whether the boy she liked returned her feelings, and how she would crumple the petal that landed on "he doesn't love me" and start over until she got "he loves me," Nechama knew she would write about that determined and unbreakable woman.
She also sensed that this strength had been forged long before, when in Auschwitz she assured her friends that one day she would return home. Nechama lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband and daughters. She is currently completing her master's degree in nutrition.
