Ernst Ludwig Kirchner's (1880-1938) art is characterized by austere beauty and bold coloration. The world's first major retrospective of Kirchner's work was curated by the artist himself in 1933. In presenting the works, he created an exhibition entirely according to his own taste. Kirchner's work continues to be exemplary of early twentieth-century art and one of the undisputed highlights of classical modernism.
