James Dunn (doctorado en Cambridge) fue durante muchos años profesor Lightfoot de Divinidad en el Departamento de Teología de la Universidad de Durham. Desde su jubilación, ha sido nombrado Profesor Emérito Lightfoot. Es uno de los principales estudiosos británicos del Nuevo Testamento, dentro de la tradición protestante. Dunn está especialmente asociado a la Nueva Perspectiva de Pablo, frase que se le atribuye haber acuñado durante su conferencia en el Manson Memorial de 1982.
Entre sus libros se encuentran Did the First Christians Worship Jesus? (2010), The New Perspective On Paul (2007), A New Perspective On Jesus: What The Quest For The Historical Jesus Missed (2005), The Theology of Paul the Apostle (1998), The Acts of the Apostles (1996), y The Epistles to the Colossians and to Philemon (1996). En 2005 se publicó un festschrift dedicado a Dunn, titulado The Holy Spirit and Christian origins: essays in honor of James D. G. Dunn, que incluye artículos de 27 estudiosos del Nuevo Testamento, en los que se examinan las primeras comunidades cristianas y sus creencias sobre el Espíritu Santo.
