Middle-aged Alex Novak (Will Arnett, who co-wrote) was looking at the end of his long marriage to Tess (Laura Dern) when he signed up for a nightclub's open mic night just to get out of the cover charge. He'd discover that standup gave him an outlet for processing his issues... and maybe, perhaps, a path to reconciliation with his spouse.
