From pirates at the dawn of civilization . . .through pirates of the middle ages . . .and the most famous pirates of piracy's golden age . . .right down to the present day this book tracks the infamous rogues of the seas. MILLER POPE, born in South Carolina, embarked on a lifelong career as an illustrator in the Marine Corps during World War II on the staff of the legendary Leatherneck magazine. During his stint on the magazine staff he took a course in advertising through the Marine Corps Institute. He also studied at the Corcoran School of Art and later, the Art Students League in New York City. His illustrations have appeared in countless publications, on novel covers, in magazines such as Glamour, Saga, Blue Book, and Reader's Digest, and in many books. He was a partner in a New York Advertising agency in the nineteen fifties and was elected to the Society of Illustrators as its youngest member in 1957. In 1975, Pope and his wife, Helen, moved to the North Carolina coast and became leaders in establishing beach and golf resort communities. He became a major force in publicizing the area and is still active in the community today. Returning to his artistic pursuits, Pope blends his love of history with his love of illustration and writing to create lavish scenes from long ago.
