Cécile B. Vigouroux, Simon Fraser University, Canada

This book is based on a series of contributions that explore the situation of children and young people impacted by migration in Africa. It is a complex, multidimensional and evolving issue. It requires an integrated, contextualized, analytical and multidisciplinary approach, capable of articulating structural determinants, individual aspirations and family strategies, while integrating the challenges of protecting the rights and development of the younger generations. All the contributions from the international conference "Child Mobility and Migration: Transitions to Adulthood in South-South Migration Contexts" organized in November 2024 in Ouagadougou, highlight the complexity and diversity of the migration dynamics of children and young people. Based on the experiences of children in Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Mali and Madagascar, these various contributions highlight the importance of socio-economic, family and educational factors in young people's migration choices. They also highlight the labour, exploitation and schooling risks and vulnerabilities that children face when it comes to their parents' migration. The diversity of backgrounds, motivations and issues related to these migratory dynamics are analysed by these diverse works. These analyses converge on the need to strengthen protection and support strategies, taking into account the aspirations of young people and local realities.

"This beautifully crafted book explores the socio-economic, political and human rights dimensions of child migration in West Africa. It challenges every adult about the world we are building, which forces children to migrate, sometimes at the risk of their lives. An important book to read." Cécile B. Vigouroux, Simon Fraser University, Canada
