In Duarte's Homeland: a stage-play in three acts. Set on a construction site in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, the play follows three construction workers-Rafael, Oscar, and Julio-as they face emotional and existential challenges while considering the possibility of migrating to the United States during the 1980s or 1990s. Driven by dreams of a better life in San Juan, Puerto Rico, or New York City, but held back by poverty. They share memories, fears, and hopes while working under the Caribbean sun. Still, their plans to leave are both made and broken too, with a fall, a betrayal, shadows of doubt, and tests of their relationships as each must confront their future and what they are willing to walk away from. The play blurs the line between reality and truth, exploring migration not as a solution, but as a catalyst for change. This is so because dignity surrounds those who are building the world and longing to escape their circumstances to become better human beings.
