Nineteen thirteen is a difficult time for the native population of South Africa. The Native land act forces tenanted black farmers from the land and into exile in their homelands. Living in such an unproductive place they have little choice if they are to survive but to work in the gold mines of the Witwatersrand. The mines are a source of great wealth, acting as an attraction to all types of villains and vagabonds who flood into the goldfields. Some look to an honest living and one such young man arrives with his family to the shores of South Africa in search of his fortune. The temptation of easy money is too much of a temptation and so it is not long before he is mixing with the more unsavoury elements of Johannesburg society.
It may seem a little strange to promote oneself as a failure, but in his early years that is how Kelvin saw himself - but then don't most of us experience similar periods in our lives. Kelvin describes it as a bungee jump with just enough length and spring in the cord to save him from disaster. Looking back, he says that it was those bad times that helped mould his character and those heightened experiences that formed part of the raw material for his novels. From those humble beginnings he found success in business, eventually selling his company within weeks of the great crash and suddenly he was free to pursue his writing, a wonderful thing. Now that he is enjoying that freedom he is able to devote the attention to his writing that it deserves and to pursue his other interests of sailing, photography and playing music.
