Hypochondriasis: A Practical Treatise on the Nature and Cure of That Disorder - Paperback

Hypochondriasis is an 18th-century medical treatise that explores the misunderstood and often stigmatized condition of health-related anxiety. Written by physician and naturalist John Hill, the work reflects Enlightenment-era attempts to rationalize and treat psychological conditions through observation and lifestyle modification. Hill challenges prevailing views that dismiss sufferers as weak or irrational, arguing instead that hypochondria is rooted in physical and emotional imbalances requiring careful management. He advocates for moderation in diet, environment, and habits-offering one of the earliest calls for mental health care grounded in both medical theory and human empathy. Far from mere antiquarian curiosity, this compact treatise provides critical insight into the early medicalization of the mind and foreshadows modern approaches to psychosomatic illness.
