Haydn's masses are enjoying increased public awareness follwing Richard Hickox's superb performance at BBC concert with the forces of Collegium Musicum and the great success of his Haydn mass edition on Chandos. This the most openly tuneful of Haydn's masses. The work belongs to a distinct type of mass associated with Advent, often called a Pastoral Mass in the 18th Century catalogues.
