Great Lakes Lighthouse Tenders: A History of the Boats and Crews That Served in the U.S. Lighthouse Service on the Great Lakes

This illustrated history book documents the ships and crews of the U.S. Lighthouse Tender Service, the unsung heroes who maintained maritime operations on the Great Lakes for over a century. Despite their critical role in keeping navigation safe and efficient, these hard-working men and their vessels have remained largely undocumented—until now.

Author Paul J. Mason presents a comprehensive visual record of lighthouse tenders that operated on the Great Lakes, featuring rare photographs and detailed accounts of the service's operations. The book fills a significant gap in Great Lakes maritime documentation, providing readers with access to previously unavailable information about these essential vessels and their crews.

What's Inside This Maritime History Book

The book covers the complete story of lighthouse tenders on the Great Lakes, from their daily operations to their place in maritime history. Readers will discover how these vessels supported the U.S. Lighthouse Service, delivering supplies, transporting personnel, and maintaining navigational aids across all five Great Lakes. The rare photographic collection brings these forgotten ships back to life, showing them in action during their service years.

Each chapter provides detailed back stories about specific tenders and their crews, offering insight into life aboard these working vessels. The illustrated format makes the technical and historical information accessible to both maritime enthusiasts and casual readers interested in Great Lakes history.

Paul J. Mason developed a love and awe of the Great Lakes while growing up in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Paul's natural draw to the history of the Lakes grew with his special interest in the U.S. Lighthouse Service, U.S. Lighthouse Tender Service and the U.S. Coast Guard. His grandfather, Richard H. Burdeno, was chief engineer on the USLHT Clover. Paul joined the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and currently serves as a volunteer crew member on a Coast Guard 25-foot patrol boat at U.S. Coast Guard (AUXOP) Station Green Bay (Wisconsin).
