Benny Goodman was noted for being one of the greatest jazz clarinetists of his generation, but there was another side of his musical ambition and that was to play the music of the great classical composers such as Mozart, Brahms and Beethoven, all of whom wrote works featuring the clarinet. Benny was to get his chance when he joined with the Budapest String Quartet to perform Mozart's Quintet For Clarinet And Strings KV.581, way back in 1938, the same year he was crowned the King Of Jazz after his band's stupendous performance at the world famed Carnegie Hall. In 1940 he joined with The Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra Of New York to perform Mozart's Concerto For Clarinet And Orchestra KV.622. Five years laterin 1945 he was to perform with pianist Nadja Reisenberg, Johannes Brahms' Sonata No.2 For Clarinet And Piano, Opus 120, No.2 and the following year, with the same pianist, he was to perform Ludwig van Beethoven's, Variations On A Theme From "Don Giovanni" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. If you are a fan of Benny Goodman's music or a classical buff then this is your chance to hear the other side of the man's music as Benny Goodman Goes Classic.
