ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
Richard Evans moves beyond myth to present a realistic portrait of the men and women who served and perpetrated the Third Reich.
Why did so many Germans participate in the crimes of Nazi Germany? How did they come to support Hitler and follow him almost to the end? For too long, Nazis have been portrayed as little more than psychopaths or criminals. In this new and important work, Richard J. Evans--one of the world's leading authorities on the Third Reich--draws on a wealth of newly evidence to present a more realistic vision of Nazi perpetrators as human beings disturbingly similar to ourselves.
In concentric circles, Evans offers fresh, rounded, and often surprising portraits of the men and women who built and served Nazi Germany, beginning with Hitler himself and continuing with prominent figures such as Göring, Goebbels, and Himmler, executors of Hitler's orders like Eichmann and Heydrich, propagandists such as Leni Riefenstahl, low-level perpetrators like the infamous Irma Grese, and unknown sympathizers and fellow travelers who aided the regime in countless ways.
Hitler's People is a chilling and brilliantly written work that allows readers to understand the texture and values of the Third Reich, and how far individuals can go when so many normal moral boundaries have disappeared.
