Germany, 1919: Having lost her fiancé Frantz in the Great War, Anna (Paula Beer) was well resigned to a life of joining his parents (Ernst Stötzner, Marie Gruber) in perpetual mourning. One day, however, young Frenchman Adrien (Pierre Niney) began making regular visits to Frantz's grave... and, when approached by Anna, asserted that they'd had a friendship.
