Pulitzer Prize-Winning Study of Vienna's Cultural Transformation

Carl E. Schorske's Fin-de-Siècle Vienna: Politics and Culture stands as a landmark work in intellectual history, examining how Vienna's political and social disintegration at the turn of the century gave birth to modern art and thought. This Pulitzer Prize-winning book offers seven interconnected studies that explore the cultural revolution emerging from crisis.

Comprehensive Analysis of Modernism's Origins

This scholarly work reveals how Vienna's unique political context shaped the emergence of early modernism. Schorske demonstrates the connections between social upheaval and artistic innovation, providing readers with a profound understanding of one of history's most important intellectual chapters. The book examines multiple aspects of Viennese culture, from politics to the arts, creating a complete picture of this transformative period.

Seven Integrated Studies

While each chapter can be read independently, the seven studies are artfully designed to build momentum and present a cohesive argument. This structure allows both casual readers and serious scholars to engage with the material at their preferred depth, making complex intellectual history accessible without sacrificing academic rigor.

Critical Acclaim and Recognition

The book has received widespread recognition from leading publications and scholars. The New York Times Book Review featured it on the front page, calling it "a profound work." The New Republic praised its wholeness and integrated design, while Newsweek described it as "a work of original synthesis and scholarship." The New York Review of Books deemed it "invaluable to the social and political historian...as well as those more concerned with the arts."
