The Randolph County Asylum was the location of misery and death for many unfortunate enough to find themselves locked away involuntarily within its rooms. Only two years after opening as a poor farm in 1851, it burned to the ground, taking with it the screaming souls of its trapped occupants. It was on this unhallowed ground that a newer, larger building was raised. The asylum sat quietly as its new inhabitants moved in and began giving it life, through the loss of their own.
