Professional Development Guide for Educational Leaders

This comprehensive leadership resource provides educational administrators and instructional coaches with 31 actionable strategies to transform teacher observations into meaningful professional growth. Written by Amy Tepper and Patrick W. Flynn, experienced educators with decades of combined experience across K-12 settings, this guide addresses the critical challenge of delivering feedback that drives real classroom improvement.

Evidence-Based Observation Framework

The book introduces a systematic approach to classroom observations that moves beyond traditional evaluation models. Leaders learn to collect meaningful evidence during live classroom visits, analyze teaching effectiveness against standards, and develop specific action steps that lead to measurable outcomes. The framework is designed for leaders at all experience levels, from new assistant principals to veteran superintendents.

Ready-to-Implement Tools and Templates

Each strategy includes explicit think-alouds that model the decision-making process during observations and feedback conversations. Evidence-collection templates help leaders document classroom practices systematically, while field-tested lesson examples demonstrate how to apply the framework across different grade levels and content areas. Feedback samples provide concrete models for crafting high-leverage conversations with teachers.

Standards-Aligned Core Skills

The guide breaks down teaching standards into discrete, observable core skills that make abstract expectations concrete. This granular approach allows leaders to identify specific areas for teacher growth and provide targeted support. Comprehensive explanations ensure leaders understand not just what to look for, but why these elements matter for student learning.

Professional Learning Through Case Studies

Replicable case studies drawn from actual school improvement initiatives provide context for applying the strategies in real-world settings. These examples span rural and urban environments, demonstrating adaptability across diverse educational contexts. The case studies serve as excellent resources for leadership team meetings and professional development sessions.
