With their vivid colors, the paintings by Costa Rica-born, New York-based Federico Herrero (born 1978) are connected to his profound perception of humanity within nature. Their large swaths of color recall the ambiguous forms of territories on a map, and Herrero has often played with the idea of geography in his oeuvre. A Piece of Waterfall in the Sound of Crickets is taken from a piece by the Costa Rican poet Alfonso Chase, in which he reflects upon the mundane beauty of the sights and sounds of his home country, despite his frequent trips abroad.
