Off duty and minding his own business, a black NYPD detective is stopped-and subsequently shot-by two white fellow officers while trying to produce his ID. His returned fire results in the death of one of the other cops, leading to an internal affairs investigation that takes place as peace is sought between two warring gangs, and a separate shooting involving the police and a young black man occurs.
