A fascinating journey through the life, ruins, and controversies of the Parthenon, guided by renowned classicist Mary Beard.

For more than two thousand years, the Parthenon has dominated the Acropolis of Athens as one of the universal symbols of classical civilization. But what do we really know about this building? How did it come to represent such diverse ideals as democracy, art, empire, and national identity throughout the centuries?

In this book, Mary Beard reconstructs with scholarly insight and engaging storytelling the history of the Temple of Athena, from its construction in the fifth century BCE to its many transformations as a Byzantine church, an Ottoman mosque, a Romantic ruin, and the focal point of one of the most passionate cultural debates of our time.

With the clarity, wit, and depth for which she is celebrated, Beard guides readers through the changing meanings of the Parthenon and its sculptures, the controversies surrounding the Elgin Marbles, and the tensions between cultural heritage, nationalism, and the universal museum. It is a revealing look at the past, present, and future of a monument that continues to inspire admiration, pride, controversy, and tears.
