Unless God intervened, it was John's time to die. Even though we utilized the treatments available, his cancer journey continued; eventually involving three different kinds. Yet, he made it clear to anyone who discussed it with him, he was living with cancer, not dying from cancer. If someone mentioned he was battling cancer, he immediately corrected them. He wasn't battling anything.

God was in charge.
