Leadership isn't revealed when everything is going well. It's revealed when the pressure is on, uncertainty surrounds us, and people are looking for someone they can trust.

After more than four decades in the fire service and public service, I've learned that leadership has very little to do with rank, title, or authority. It has everything to do with character, courage, accountability, and the choices we make every day.

In Down the Pole, Up the Ladder, I use the firehouse as a metaphor for the leadership journey we all experience. Before we can climb the ladder of greater responsibility, we must first learn to lead ourselves-with humility, integrity, and purpose. Along the way, I share stories from my own career, lessons learned through both success and failure, and practical leadership insights that have shaped my understanding of what it truly means to lead.

Although many of those experiences come from the fire service, the principles in this book apply to anyone entrusted with leading others-whether in business, government, education, nonprofit organizations, public safety, or their own community.

Over the years, I've come to believe that leadership is about earning trust, serving others, helping people discover their potential, and creating an environment where they can succeed. Every day presents an opportunity to influence someone, strengthen a culture, and make a difference that extends far beyond our time in a leadership role.

My hope is that these pages encourage you to see your own leadership differently-to lead with greater purpose, invest more deeply in others, and embrace the responsibility we all share to pay forward the opportunities, encouragement, and lessons we've received.

Every leader leaves a legacy. In the end, our leadership won't be measured by the titles we held or the accomplishments we achieved, but by what continues because we were there.
