Danish immigrant Holger Olsen (Viggo Mortensen, who also wrote and directed) signs up with the Union Army and goes off to fight in the Civil War, leaving the woman he loves-French-Canadian Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps)-behind at their Nevada home.
