Holmes, Ernest: - Ernest Holmes (1887-1960) was an American writer, lecturer, spiritual teacher, and founder of the Religious Science movement, also known through the broader tradition of Science of Mind. Born in Maine, Holmes was largely self-educated and became deeply interested in philosophy, religion, psychology, metaphysics, and the healing movements of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His thinking drew from New Thought, Transcendentalism, Christian Science, mental healing, Eastern and Western philosophy, and his own effort to describe spiritual law in practical terms.Holmes became known for teaching that thought is creative, that the universe is governed by an impersonal spiritual law, and that individuals can change their experience by changing consciousness. His work emphasized affirmative prayer, mental discipline, spiritual awareness, and the unity of the individual mind with a larger creative intelligence. Rather than presenting religion as dogma or ritual alone, Holmes framed it as a practical science of mind and spirit, concerned with healing, prosperity, confidence, purpose, and the realization of human potential. His major works include Creative Mind, Creative Mind and Success, The Science of Mind, This Thing Called You, and many essays, lectures, and lessons that helped shape twentieth-century metaphysical religion and self-help. Holmes's influence continues through Centers for Spiritual Living and through readers interested in New Thought, manifestation, affirmations, mental causation, spiritual psychology, and the relationship between belief and lived experience. His writings remain a key bridge between older metaphysical traditions and the modern language of personal transformation.
