When medieval England was ruled by a usurper king, timid minstrel Hubert Hawkins (Danny Kaye) found himself conscripted by a rebel band protecting the throne's true infant heir-and thrust into comically dangerous intrigues when he was sent to infiltrate the palace in the guise of the crown's newly hired fool.
