Dr Maurice Perks is a retired IBM Fellow who spent 50 years working on the challenges of large, complex IT systems. He still calls modern IT systems 'computer systems'.
Long ago, he trained as a scientist, and the fundamentals of physics, including its tight and loose laws, are still part of his reasoning. Like so many, he is puzzled, concerned, worried and often mystified by climate change and all the information and disinformation accompanying it. He firmly believes that humans should not destroy their planet and the patterns of nature. So, he's been moved to write this book. It's the fourth public book that he's authored or co-authored. The first three are in Appendix A. He lives in North Dorset, UK, and Nice, France. These are places with different climates and cultures. One place is rural and wet, while the other is urban and dry.
Still, both locations have been fashioned by humanity to allow people to live there, enjoy aspects of nature, and worry about whether we are bequeathing a poisoned chalice to new generations or a better civilisation. He puzzles over whether North Dorset will soon be so brown and arid that dairy cows cannot graze on green grass, and whether the blue chairs that populate Nice's seafront will, in a future summer, be so hot that no one can rest their bodies on them without burning sensitive parts. Or will these places continue to evolve slowly, retaining their current characteristics?
