Mr. McMiller realized that you don't choose your place of origin, but you can determine what you become in life. Being raised on the south side of Chicago Ron decided to make a change in the world, irrespective of where he has come from. Ron had a childhood dream of defending his country and becoming a Naval Officer. After his street luck ran out, and as he stood in front of the judge, he was strongly persuaded by a Chicago police officer of Joining the Navy. So at the age 18 of years old, he joined the United States Navy. In his book, he describes how Chicago Developed Him and The Navy made him a Man. Ron was raised by two families, his mother, and his street family.
