Dr. J. Thom Love grew up in rural North Carolina. After high school, he attended and graduated from Duke University; followed by earning his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. After obtaining his medical degree, he joined the US Navy, where he completed the Navy School of Aviation Medicine. In the Navy, Thom served on the teaching staff of the US Naval School of Aviation Medicine for two years. He volunteered for service as a flight surgeon with the 1st Marine Air Wing in Viet Nam. His service in Viet Nam was awarded with the Bronze Star with Combat V, two Air Medals and the South Vietnamese Medal for medical mission to the South Vietnamese people. Upon return from his service in southeast Asia, he completed his surgical training at the University of Texas and Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas. Following his residency, he joined the teaching staff of the University of Texas Medical School in Galveston, Texas. In all his endeavors he was supported by his wife, and high school sweetheart, Lynda until her death from cancer in 1975. At the time of her death, she left three children, ages 13, 10 and 6. Dr. Love has practiced in academic areas, private practice and lastly in group practices. He is now retired, residing in the DFW area. After retirement, he completed these writings composed during the time of the illness and death of his wife.
