Captain Cook's Voyages Round The World (1897) is a historical account of the three voyages made by the famous British explorer, Captain James Cook, during the late 18th century. The book is a compilation of Cook's journals, letters, and other writings, edited by his friend and fellow explorer, John Douglas. The first voyage, which took place from 1768 to 1771, was aimed at observing the transit of Venus and exploring the Pacific Ocean. Cook and his crew visited Tahiti, New Zealand, and Australia, among other places, and made important scientific discoveries in the fields of astronomy, botany, and cartography. The second voyage, from 1772 to 1775, was focused on exploring the Southern Ocean and searching for the legendary Terra Australis Incognita, or ""unknown southern land"". Cook discovered several islands, including South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and circumnavigated Antarctica, proving that it was a continent. The third and final voyage, from 1776 to 1779, was intended to find a northwest passage to Asia and explore the Pacific coast of North America. Cook explored the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska, and the west coast of North America, but was killed in a skirmish with the native Hawaiians in 1779.Captain Cook's Voyages Round The World is a fascinating firsthand account of some of the most important explorations in history, and provides insight into the challenges, dangers, and discoveries of the Age of Exploration. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
