A peaceful village. A buried secret. A gripping new crime novel for 2020.

When private investigator Carlos Jacobi spends Christmas with his sister in the Peak District, his ex-police dog unearths the body of an elderly man in the woods. Why would someone murder a seemingly harmless old man? When the dead man's family hires Carlos to investigate, he discovers fractured relationships, family secrets and villagers with something to hide.

To top it all, the man in charge of the investigation is someone Carlos had hoped never to meet again. Memories of their time in Afghanistan still haunt him. The bad blood between the two men threatens to cloud the investigation as neither can bury the past. DCI Terry Masters is livid when Carlos is hired to investigate the death, and takes it personally. He orders his sergeant to make sure the private investigator is kept out of the loop.

Carlos unravels lies and motives among the seemingly innocuous village population. Soon, his dog, Lady makes another grisly discovery, and the suspense heightens.

Carlos teams up with an old friend to get to the bottom of this frustrating case.

Murder and lies in the Peak District.

Brookes, Dawn: - Dawn Brookes holds an MA in creative writing and is author of the Rachel Prince Mystery series, combining a unique blend of murder, cruising and medicine with a touch of romance. Her latest venture is the Carlos Jacobi series. Carlos is a PI and his sidekick is Fiona Cook, a troubled, but likeable detective sergeant. British author Ms Brookes has a 39 year nursing pedigree and takes regular cruise holidays for research purposes! She brings these passions along with a love of clean crime to her writing. The surname of the Rachel Prince protagonist is in honour of her childhood dog, 'Prince', who used to put his head on her knee while she lost herself in books. Dawn is also author of a series of memoirs. Hurry up Nurse: memoirs of nurse training in the 1970s, Hurry up Nurse 2: London calling and Hurry up Nurse 3. Dawn worked as a hospital nurse, midwife, district nurse and community matron across a thirty-nine year year career. Before turning her hand to writing for a living, she had multiple articles published in professional journals and co-edited a nurse textbook. She grew up in Leicester, later moved to London and Berkshire but now lives in Derbyshire. Dawn holds a bachelors degree with honours in community health studies, a Masters degree in education and more recently a Masters degree with Distinction in Creative Writing. Writing across genres, Dawn also writes for children. Dawn has a passion for nature and loves animals, especially dogs. Animals will continue to feature in her children's books as she believes caring for animals and nature helps children to become kinder human beings.
