Located at the edge of Sariska, in southeast, Bhaangarh is known popularly as a place haunted by ghosts and spirits. According to local legends, the site became a refuge for phantoms due to a tantric's curse. Mass media has further strengthened these ideas. Bhaangarh ki Atmakatha: Ek Aitehasik Moolyaankan attempts to present the rich and interesting history of Bhaangarh in a new light. The chapters here demonstrate that in the seventeenth century, Bhaangarh was a flourishing town. However, in the early years of the eighteenth century, due to political reasons, the prosperity of the town declined. At the turn of the twentieth century, ghost stories became prevalent which helped in protecting the urban centre from further desolation. It is commonly believed that while the site came into prominence due to the activities of the Nathpanthis, they were also responsible for its decline. And it was due to the Vaishnavites that the site regained its eminence. The book explores the historical episodes to explain the reasons behind the emergence of popular legends about the site.
