Based on the autobiography of Gypsy Rose Lee, this made-for-TV adaptation of the 1959 musical Gypsy: A Musical Fable written by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim depicts the life and times of a stripper and her domineering mother. The album was released in 1993 and features Bette Midler, who also starred in the film as the character Mama Rose. Midler's performance earned her a Golden Globe Award in 1994 for Best Actress in a Mini-Series or a TV Film. Gypsy also received an unprecedented twelve Emmy nominations.
