About the Author
Allen was born in 1864 in England. When he was 15 years old, his father left for New York City and died two days after his arrival. The cause of his death is not clear, although some have conjectured he was the fatal victim of a robbery. Allen then chose to leave his schooling in order to support his family. Working in a number of manufacturing firms in various roles, he found he could make a comfortable living as a clerk . At the age of 38, Allen retired from full-time employment and moved with his wife and daughter to a small cottage to seek simplicity and fulfillment as a writer of thoughtful texts. Over the next nine years, he founded a magazine and wrote 19 books. Allen died in 1912 at the age of 47.
